Your name and your farm

Steve & Jill Sheffels
West Hills Joint Venture

Location of your farm

Sprague WA, four miles west of Sprague, just north of I-90 and Sprague Lake in Lincoln County.

History of your farm

Began farming in Sprague in 1982. I am a 4th generation farmer, moving from the Wilbur area. Our descendants were serfs [farm laborers] from Germany.

Why do you think direct seeding is important to the future of agriculture?

Direct seeding will guarantee that our cropland will continue to produce at high levels far into the future, as the need for more food continuously grows at a rapid pace.

Why are you involved with Shepherd’s Grain?

As a marketing tool. Guarantees that I will be able to sell my crop at a profit.

Why do you think it is important to develop relationships between the grower and Shepherd’s Grain customers?

To provide names and faces of what really are farm families. We are not giant faceless corporate monsters. Faces of farmers and their families can't help but show that we care about the food we produce. We just do.
