Shepherd's Grain hires a new General Manager

By Karl Kupers on March 01, 2014

As you may notice the primary text of this newsletter is the announcement of a new General Manger selection. This was requested by me two years ago when we changed the structure of our company to a board managed LLC away from a two person managed LLC. The scope and size of Shepherd’s Grain today is demanding more structure and analytical thinking in its future. Small startup companies fail many times when the founders do not realize it is time to step aside. I am very happy the board selected Mike Moran and am looking forward to the transition. I know Mike appreciates the culture of Shepherd’s Grain first 11 years and the direction will continue to focus on quality, transparency, traceability and strong relationships with our producers and market partners.

Columbia Plateau Producers selects a new General Manager

The Columbia Plateau Producers Board of Directors and Management are proud to announce they have selected Mike Moran as the new General Manager for CPP. Mike is no stranger to CPP/Shepherd’s Grain. Mike first met Karl and Fred over 14 years ago when he was General Production Manager at Grand Central Baking Company in Portland. Mike was instrumental in working with Karl and Fred at the conception of Shepherd’s Grain to test and select the first wheat varieties to be used in our flour. It was clear from that first meeting that this concept –a high quality, consistent, flour sourced directly from the farm and guaranteeing a sustainable income to the grower, was a shared vision. Motivated by this shared vision, Mike left the bakery in 2003 to pursue a degree in Community Economic Development at Portland State University, with a focus on sustainable food systems. Most recently Mike worked as the Strategic Sourcing Manager at Oregon Food Bank, connecting with food producers to find mutually beneficial solutions for addressing hunger in the NW. Mike has served as a board member of CPP, Portland Farmers Market, and The Bread Baker’s Guild of America.

I will continue to play a vital role at CPP, both in the short term ensuring a smooth transition and succession plan, and the long term as we continue to develop new products and opportunities, and build on the quality, transparency, and sustainability that have come to define Shepherd’s Grain. As always, thank you for your support of Shepherd’s Grain and our family of producers.
